This is a windows limitation so how does Comm32 do it ?

It's not a limitation in Windows - Windows95/98 support 128 com ports while NT/2000 and newer versions of windows support up to 256 com ports.

The limitation in MSComm32 is probably just a legacy thing left over from the very early days of Windows (Windows3).

Our Comm32 ocx uses the Windows API so is only limited by the number of physical ports attached to your computer

I don't know what the theoretical limit is for Windows, but the RealPort COM port redirector driver from Digi supports com port numbers 1-4096 for Windows 2000, XP, and newer.

I'm guessing that the key to your statement is "Redirector". Windows would communicate with one of it's own ports in the range 1 to 256 and the redirector can redirect that to one of digi's private ports which can have any numbers they want because they're not actually Windows com ports.

Of course I can't be sure - I don't work here - just a visitr who thought he'd like to add something to your statement
